Cannabis oil, hash oil, THC oil or hemp seed oil after all?
Cannabis oil, hash oil, THC oil, or hemp oil anyway? What are the differences and what should you pay attention to if you want to use it yourself? For thousands of years, the cannabis plant has been used as a medicine to treat all sorts of ailments, such as pain, cramps and depression. You can make your own oil. Under certain conditions it is also possible to get medicinal cannabis oil on prescription in the Netherlands.
Making your own cannabis oil?
Once I decided to make my own cannabis oil with THC-rich buds that I had received from someone. My setup was quite primitive: a camping gas stove with little nuance, a large frying pan and avocado oil. Making your own cannabis oil is not that difficult, but it is important to control the temperature as much as possible. Otherwise, the buds can quickly burn and the active ingredients can be lost.
I really had no idea how hot I was letting the oil get. To my mind, it went too fast and I was pretty sure it was going to fail. Later, when I conducted a test and had a few drops of the final result under my tongue to soak in, I was convinced that the cannabis oil was not psychoactive.
Sad but true. So I put it in the kitchen to use in dishes, I thought. You guessed it: when I made a salad a few weeks later, I unsuspectingly used the oil as a dressing. My friend and I both ate from it and satisfied, I went to read a book afterwards.
I began to notice how relaxed and good I was starting to feel. I closed the book and decided to sit in the middle of the living room and meditate. My feelings were intense and I was completely zen to myself. Suddenly the penny dropped: "Wait a minute, I'm stoned out of my mind!”
I think this was the first time in my life that I was high on weed without even knowing it. The wonderful feeling turned into a paranoid one. I began to worry about my friend, who had left in the car to pick up something.
In a panic, I called him to ask him how he felt. He felt strange, but had no idea what was wrong. I was so relieved when he came back later.
Then we had an uncontrollable laugh and I triumphantly observed that my cannabis oil worked pretty well after all!
Warning when using cannabis oil
Fortunately for us, this story ended well. However, a warning is in order: a lot of incidents with cannabis happen when one uses it orally. When smoking or vaporizing cannabis, a user has much more control over the entire experience. The effects of marijuana begin to take effect after only a few minutes, as the active ingredients are immediately released and absorbed through the lungs. When a user feels that enough is enough, it is easier to stop in time.
With cannabis oil, or cannabutter, which is also processed in edibles, for example, it is much more difficult to estimate what a good dose is. It takes longer for the body to absorb the THC and other cannabinoids. It can take more than an hour for the effects to become truly noticeable! If you are engaged in a risky activity, such as driving a car, at that very moment, it can hit you hard and cause dangerous situations.

But now we dive into the terminologies of the many types of oils available that involve the cannabis plant. What types are there all about?
Medicinal cannabis oil
As a patient, you may qualify for medicinal cannabis oil. This oil is made under very controlled conditions and meets all kinds of requirements and rounds of testing. The oil is a diluted extract and contains certain percentages of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids.
Hash oil
Also called hash oil, honey oil, THC oil, or cannabis oil. It is obtained by making an extraction of cannabis or hash. The concentrate contains high concentrations of terpenes, resin and active ingredients. There are several ways in which hash oil can be obtained.
A common way is to extract using butane or ethanol. This separates the active ingredients from the rest of the plant material. Hash oil can be solid or liquid in form, depending on the method of preparation and temperature. There are also different color differences. Common is translucent golden color, to light brown. Hash oil can even be black.
The amount of THC present in hash oil can vary enormously. It all has to do with which cannabis strain is used and how the oil is made.
E-cigarettes with hash oil?
Since e-cigarettes were invented, new flavors and options have been added all the time. Meanwhile, it is also possible to get hash oil as an e-liquid. Unfortunately, more and more studies are coming out showing that the use of e-cigarettes is very harmful to your health. If you want to use cannabis medicinally, this method of use is highly inadvisable.
In 2019, a study revealed that 56% of samples of vape liquids for e-cigarettes that were examined tested positive for vitamin E acetate. This was linked to a recent outbreak of a certain lung disease circulating in the United States. It is agreed that this element may play a major role in this lung disease, but does not rule out the possibility that other contaminants may also play a role.
Dabbing
Vaporizing hash oil is also known as dabbing. I will elaborate on this in a future blog. Dabbing comes from the English verb 'to daub'.
In order to dab, you need a number of work pieces. At Sirius you will find a whole range of dab material of the highest quality. What you need is an oil rig, which consists of a special glass bong, and a chamber made of quartz. The idea is to heat the hash oil in such a way that the vapors are released and can be inhaled directly.
There are also various dab tools that are useful for processing the sticky oil, or concentrate. Furthermore, there are also jars to store your materials in.
Vaporizers
There are various vaporizer models with which hash oil can be vaporized. Take the Pax 3, the latest model of these elegant and high quality vaporizers. The Pax is very simple to use and works with an LED system, where the light tells you the state of the battery, temperature and charging. Also the Mighty and the Crafty are great vaporizers with which you can also use oil.
CBD oil
CBD oil contains negligible amounts of THC, so it has no psychoactive effects. The oil is made from industrial hemp, a certain type of cannabis that produces hardly any THC and is therefore of no interest to the cannabis grower. For people who are looking for the therapeutic effect of CBD, this oil is very suitable.
The oil consists of a concentrate of CBD (and possibly other cannabinoids such as CBN, CBC...) supplemented with a carrier oil such as olive oil or hemp seed oil.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is used to treat a variety of ailments. For example, it can be used to help with sleep problems, physical pain, stress, anxiety, epilepsy, Crohn’s disease and many more.
Hempseed oil
Delicious and healthy to use in cooking. Hemp seed oil is made from the protein-rich seed of the hemp plant. Like CBD oil, the amounts of THC are minimal, so you can't get stoned or high. Hemp seeds contain healthy fats that are necessary for a healthy body. For vegetarians and vegans, hemp seed is an extra interesting food, because it is rich in protein. It is also interesting for athletes and meat eaters, for example, hemp seeds contain more protein than chicken!
Try these delicious products from Medihemp. Using certified organic ingredients, they make various blends based on hemp seeds to make your own drinks or to add to a smoothie. Pure hemp seeds are also available. This can be used as a topping for all sorts of things. The nutty flavor and creamy texture go well together in smoothies, soups and salads.
Which oil do you have experience with?
As you can see, there are different forms in which the cannabis plant can be used in the form of oil. Always keep in mind that a concentrate of cannabis can be incredibly strong. Dabbing, for example, is only suitable for experienced users, as the high comes in much more intense. In one hit you can get the equivalent of a fat joint.
So always know which oil you're dealing with and always be careful with homemade oil. It may be more psychoactive than you thought!
